I've always been a fan of ballin' on a budget. Thrifting is literally a way of life for me and my closest friends. We go on thrift tours and are known to be consistent customers of Good Will (especially in high end neighborhoods, that's where you find the luxe).
My go-to thrift store? Value Village of course! Its a thrifter's dream--a thrifting DEPARTMENT STORE. Its huge. Because I've worked at second-hand stores like Plato's Closet and Buffalo Exchange, I've learned how to examine clothing for the following: signs of wear (fuzzies, fading), holes, tears, rips, smells. The usual. So I know how to choose luxe fabrics and items in the best conditions. The best part about thrifting (other than the prices)? Finding original trends that are current (IE: vintage pieces that are now current trends, but no one has it like you do lol).
I had my "Merlot" shoot with my cousin, Mr. SOC, and the 100% leather trench, body suit and velvet pants are all thrifted from various Value Village stores. The fur collar is a detachable gift from a past NYC internship (not exactly what kind of real fur it is...), while the boots are from Target :)
Velma Rossa and Oliver Asike are the powerful sister-brother duo from Kenya reviving the African thrifting scene.
Literally walking, breathing inspiration, this dynamic duo pushes the envelope by reinforcing that style is executed within the wardrobe of the trendsetter. Velma and Oliver post their fashion happenings and findings throughout their Tumblr page: 2ManySiblings.
Every post is just as breathtaking as the one before. Its so great to see amazing fashion coming from the continent I hold so dear and even more reassuring to find out that thrifting in Kenya is creating a huge wave.
Absolutely loving all the adornments on the neck right now. Definitely something to take to the next level for fall.

I've worked with Belk, Inc. for close to 2 years now and one of my most rewarding parts of the job is working with our Southern Musician Showcase winners. This is the 3rd year Belk has crowned winners of the competition and its such a blessing to be able to provide something that gives confidence to a series of people as they pursue their passion. Styling these musicians in a variety of different Belk sponsored events allows them to not only represent the brand in a cool, unique way, but most importantly helps solidify their identity and brand as an artist. From pop country stars to Americana rockers and pop singers full of soul, it truly is a blast. Make sure to keep up with all of our styling adventures by clicking on the styling page of this site!
We had our 2016 SMS Finale in Charleston last month. Take a look at a few cool pictures from the wardrobe fitting we had. This was the FIRST time ever styling 5 full bands after meeting them once, months before. Little to say, I prayed a lot for effective fits and rounded up pretty well at the end!
